Why Equal Length Matters

An inline-six has a natural rhythm: six evenly spaced pulses per revolution cycle. When every cylinder's exhaust travels the same distance to the outlet, those pulses arrive in perfect sequence — and that even spacing is exactly what produces the crisp, melodic, straight-six sound BMW fans chase.

Unequal-length piping scrambles that rhythm. Pulses arrive at slightly different times, the tone gets muddled, and the engine's character disappears into noise.
